At Willow Grove we want to engage, inspire and challenge our children, equipping them with the skills and strategies they need to develop as competent performers across the PE curriculum and to know and appreciate the importance of exercise in order to be a happy and healthy, mature individual as they grow. Also, in order that they are aware of the benefits and need to work as part of a team in some sports in order to succeed and above all how good sportsmanship underpins everything they attempt to achieve in this area of their education.

Our Physical Education curriculum is supported by the external expertise of The PE Academy, providing pupils with high-quality opportunities to develop their physical skills, fitness, teamwork and confidence across a broad range of sports and activities. Our PE provision encourages children to be active, develop their physical competence and understand the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, while also promoting values such as teamwork, fairness, resilience and respect.

Pupils in Years 3–6 also take part in swimming, developing their swimming ability, water confidence and understanding of water safety. By the end of Key Stage 2, the National Curriculum expects pupils to be able to swim at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue.

Alongside our regular PE programme, pupils have opportunities to develop important life skills through Bikeability, building cycling confidence and learning how to cycle safely and responsibly.

Be Safe: We follow rules, use equipment responsibly and develop the skills we need to keep ourselves and others safe.

Be Kind: We show respect, fairness and good sportsmanship, supporting and encouraging others both in and out of competition.

Be Positive: We challenge ourselves, celebrate our progress and develop resilience by having a go, learning from mistakes and striving to be our personal best.
