At Willow Grove we want to our children to be comfortable and confident with Mathematics to enable them to be able to use and apply their skills and knowledge throughout their school life as they journey into the wider world, leaving school with an understanding of life skills associated with maths. 

Our Mathematics curriculum follows the White Rose Maths approach, providing a carefully sequenced programme that develops pupils’ mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Children are encouraged to make connections between mathematical ideas, use practical resources and representations, explain their thinking and apply their knowledge to increasingly challenging problems. Our approach is supported by the principles of teaching for mastery promoted by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), ensuring that pupils develop a deep and secure understanding before moving on to new concepts.

Where children require additional support, we use targeted Maths Recovery interventions to identify and address gaps in understanding, helping pupils develop secure foundations and greater confidence in mathematics. Our aim is for every child to see themselves as a mathematician, develop a positive attitude towards maths and make meaningful progress.

Be Kind: We listen to and respect other people's mathematical ideas, supporting one another to learn and succeed.

Be Positive: We embrace challenges, learn from our mistakes and develop confidence in ourselves as mathematicians.
