  • Early Reading

At Willow Grove, we believe that learning to read is the key that unlocks every child’s potential. Our early reading approach is built around the Sounds Write phonics scheme, a proven, evidence-based programme that helps children develop the essential skills to become confident, independent readers and writers. Through Sounds Write, children learn how the sounds in spoken language link to the letters and spellings in written words. Lessons are engaging, carefully sequenced, and multi-sensory.

You can find out more about Sounds Write here via this link. You can sign up to a course which will guide you through the following steps in relation to Sounds Write.

The course will show you how to:

    • help your child take their first steps in reading and spelling
    • understand how to help your child build, write and read simple cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words
    • understand how to correct your child when they make a mistake in their reading or writing simple words
    • have a basic understanding of how phonics works

Sounds Write also have an app to support Early Reading available on i-pads only.

Our approach to early reading reflects our core values: Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Positive.

    • We create a safe and nurturing environment where children feel secure to take risks in their learning and build confidence step by step.
    • We promote kindness by encouraging teamwork, patience, and support for one another as we learn together.
    • We foster a positive attitude by celebrating effort, perseverance, and every small success along the journey to becoming a reader.

At our setting, we know that emotional well-being and learning go hand in hand. That’s why our staff use the Sounds Write programme not only to teach reading but also to nurture resilience, focus, and a love of reading.

Here at Willow Grove, every child is supported to be safe, be kind, and be positive — and through a love of books, to discover the joy and confidence that comes from unlocking the world of words.
