At Willow Grove we strive to ensure our pupils meet their potential and are able to participate fully as a member of their community, by providing a high-quality education in English. 

They will be taught to use their expressive language and writing skills to communicate their thoughts and emotions with others. They will also learn how to use their receptive language and reading skills to enable others to communicate with them. 

Through reading in particular, our pupils will have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.  Access to a broad and balanced reading diet, will play a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. 

Our English curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to become enthusiastic and effective readers and writers.We use Read Write Inc phonics scheme. Phonics provides a structured approach to developing secure phonics knowledge, decoding skills and reading fluency.

Once pupils have completed the phonics programme, they progress to Ready Steady Write, which develops their reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and oracy through engaging, high-quality texts. Across the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to develop a love of reading, communicate their ideas clearly and write with increasing independence, accuracy and purpose.

Be Kind: We listen to others, respect different ideas and use our words thoughtfully and respectfully.

Be Positive: We develop a love of reading and writing, embrace challenges and take pride in communicating our ideas and creativity.
