Caring for animals in school and in the world is important to the Willow Grove school community. Ms Simpson is currently working with our children on a number of initiatives to support local wildlife in the community. You can find out more in this section of our website.
Looking after animals ties in with our school values.
Animals help children develop emotional awareness, social skills, and resilience in a natural and supportive way. By integrating animals into our school life, we provide opportunities for children to practise being safe, kind, and positive every day, supporting their wellbeing and personal development.
In January 2026, we welcomed our first fish into school, in our new aquarium. The children (and staff) love to watch the fish, and bubbles, to help them to feel relaxed. The children also like to carry out research about the fish that are in the tanks, finding out interesting facts and how to care for them. The fish tank has been so popular that in April 2026 we got two more in school. They have been a great hit! We even have a group of children who sit next to one of the tanks to eat their lunch.
Be Safe
Animals help create a calm and reassuring environment for children who may experience anxiety, emotional distress, or difficulties with self-regulation. Interacting with animals can reduce stress and support emotional wellbeing. Learning how to care for animals safely also helps children develop responsibility, boundaries, and respect for others.
Be Kind
Caring for animals encourages empathy, patience, and compassion. Animals provide non-judgemental companionship, making them particularly beneficial for children who may find relationships challenging. Through gentle and respectful interactions, children learn the importance of kindness and how their behaviour impacts others.
Be Positive
Positive experiences with animals help build confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of achievement. Animals offer unconditional acceptance, helping children feel valued and supported. These experiences can increase motivation, engagement, and a positive attitude towards learning and school life.
We currently have Yuki in school as our school pet.
