Spanish 

At Willow Grove School we teach our children Spanish.  It is our intention that all children in Key Stage 2 will access a Spanish curriculum which will develop their knowledge and progressively increase their vocabulary and skills in developing languages.  They will use and apply an increasing bank of vocabulary and knowledge of cultural differences which will enable our children to be more confident/understanding global citizens. 

Our Grammarsaurus Spanish curriculum provides pupils with a progressive introduction to learning a modern foreign language, developing their confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. Children build their vocabulary and understanding through engaging, age-appropriate topics and activities, developing their ability to communicate using increasingly accurate Spanish. The curriculum encourages children to explore language and culture, make connections between Spanish and English, and develop an appreciation of the wider Spanish-speaking world.

Be Safe: We use language respectfully and confidently, creating a safe environment where everyone feels comfortable having a go and making mistakes.

Be Kind: We respect different languages, cultures and traditions, celebrating the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.

Be Positive: We embrace the challenge of learning a new language, building confidence and celebrating our progress as we communicate in Spanish.

British Sign Language

Alongside our Spanish curriculum, pupils have opportunities to develop an introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) as an additional language. BSL is a recognised language with its own vocabulary, grammar and structure, and learning some BSL helps children develop communication skills while promoting inclusion, empathy and an understanding of Deaf culture. BSL is not taught as a core subject throughout the year; instead, children are introduced to useful signs and phrases through occasional lessons and wider opportunities across school life. This enables pupils to develop practical communication skills and understand how language can be expressed in different ways.

Be Safe: We communicate clearly and respectfully, making sure everyone has the opportunity to understand and be understood.

Be Kind: We celebrate different ways of communicating and show respect for Deaf people, their language and their culture.

Be Positive: We have a go at learning new signs, building our confidence and discovering new ways to connect with others.
